The Fiji Corrections Service is taking significant initial steps to explore potential development projects aimed at enhancing sustainability within its facilities. Recently, Commissioner of Corrections, Dr. Jalesi Nakarawa, visited the Indian High Commission to engage in discussions with His Excellency P. S. K. Karthigeyan, the Indian High Commissioner.

A central topic of their discussion was the introduction of solar energy systems across Fiji’s correctional facilities. This initiative is part of the Fiji Corrections Service’s commitment to reducing its carbon footprint, enhancing energy efficiency, and decreasing operational expenses.

If the solarisation project comes to fruition, it would represent a landmark advance in utilizing renewable energy solutions within the corrections sector. This development would also support Fiji’s broader goals of sustainable development and energy independence.

Dr. Nakarawa acknowledged the continuous support from the Indian Government, emphasizing the shared goals of innovation and sustainability that could form the basis of this partnership. High Commissioner Karthigeyan expressed India’s readiness to explore collaboration opportunities, highlighting India’s expertise in renewable energy and sustainable infrastructure.

This initial meeting serves as a foundation for further consultations and engagement on the project. Both parties agreed to keep the dialogue open and share technical information to evaluate the project’s feasibility and implementation strategies.

The Fiji Corrections Service is committed to embracing modern, eco-friendly practices while fulfilling its core mandate of providing safe and secure correctional facilities. This commitment not only demonstrates proactive environmental stewardship but also showcases a promising partnership that could yield long-term benefits for both the corrections system and the broader community in Fiji.

This initiative reflects a growing trend among correctional facilities worldwide to adopt sustainable practices, signaling a positive direction towards greater environmental responsibility and modernization in the corrections sector.
