Fiji Corrections Service Takes Bold Step in Internal Restructuring

The Fiji Corrections Service (FCS) has affirmed the appointment of Nurse Practitioner Vakaloloma Mocevakaca Nakarawa, stating that her position complies with Fiji’s legal framework. In their official statement, FCS clarified that Commissioner Nakarawa appointed NP Nakarawa under Section 130 (7) of the Constitution, which governs appointments, removals, and penalties within the service. They emphasized that this act reflects adherence to the stipulated legislative protocols.

Furthermore, FCS highlighted Section 103 (3), reaffirming that the Commissioner holds command over the organization, which includes authority over administrative policies aimed at improving operational efficiency. It was stated that the Commissioner, in collaboration with the Minister responsible for corrections, is empowered to set terms of employment, qualifications, salary, and overall staffing numbers for the service.

In what is described as an internal restructuring aimed at enhancing service delivery, NP Nakarawa has been appointed as Medical Officer in Charge based in Suva, overseeing healthcare operations for the Southern, Central, and Eastern Divisions. Meanwhile, a Medical Officer based in Lautoka will supervise medical services in the Western and Northern Divisions. FCS noted that these appointments were strategically arranged to bolster the newly established Medical Unit without any increase in salaries or allowances.

The FCS is profoundly dedicated to providing equal opportunities for its employees, aligning with the broader values upheld by the Public Service in Fiji.

This article comes amid ongoing scrutiny faced by the Fiji Corrections Service regarding internal governance and appointment processes, following concerns raised about potential conflicts of interest. Nonetheless, FCS is committed to transparency and maintaining the integrity of its operations, suggesting a focus on service improvement amidst challenges.

The emphasis on legal compliance and commitment to equal employment opportunities presents a positive outlook for the future of the Fiji Corrections Service, aiming to foster a more efficient and effectively managed environment for both staff and those under their care.
