Fiji Corrections Service Suspends Inmate Funeral Releases: What’s Behind the Change?

The Fiji Corrections Service (FCS) has announced that it will temporarily suspend the practice of allowing inmates to attend the funerals of their close relatives. This decision is part of a broader review of the agency’s operational policies and procedures, aimed at ensuring the safety and consistency of services provided.

For several years, the FCS has granted temporary releases on a case-by-case basis, enabling inmates to attend the funerals of immediate family members as a humanitarian gesture. However, the absence of a formal policy governing these releases has prompted the need for a thorough review.

Commissioner of Corrections, Dr. Jalesi Nakarawa, emphasized that while the FCS acknowledges the emotional toll of bereavement on inmates, it is essential to establish clear and consistent guidelines that also consider public safety and operational needs.

The review will focus on several key areas:
– Setting clear eligibility criteria for temporary release on compassionate grounds.
– Ensuring the safety and security of both the public and the inmates.
– Reducing any operational disruptions that may arise from such releases.
– Engaging with key stakeholders to align the policy with best practices.

Dr. Nakarawa confirmed that during the review process, no inmates will be allowed to attend funerals.
