The Fiji Corrections Service (FCS) has announced the termination of two correction officers due to their involvement in a drug-related incident that occurred during a recent police operation. The officers were found at a property that law enforcement suspects was being used as a drug lab, where various drug-related paraphernalia was discovered, including digital weighing scales and bags containing residues believed to be methamphetamine.
Commissioner Dr. Jalesi Nakarawa stated the situation unfolded when the officers were identified during a police raid on Tuesday in Nakasi. Following an intelligence report, the FCS launched its own investigation, confirming that the officers had been renting accommodation from a known drug dealer—a former inmate at the Suva Remand Centre. Alarmingly, both officers were reportedly cohabiting despite being married.
Dr. Nakarawa reiterated the FCS’s strict zero-tolerance policy towards any form of misconduct among its officers. He emphasized that the integrity of the organization must be upheld and that officers are expected to act as role models in society. Actions that compromise the integrity of the service, especially those linked to criminal conduct, will result in immediate disciplinary measures, which in this case included the summary dismissal of the involved officers.
This incident reflects ongoing efforts by the FCS to maintain high ethical standards and address drug-related issues within its ranks. Over recent months, the organization has implemented strict measures, including random drug testing and disciplinary actions against officers found violating these protocols. The FCS is committed to collaboration with law enforcement agencies to counteract drug-related crimes and ensure that its staff adheres to the principles of discipline and accountability.
In light of these developments, the FCS is striving to enhance public trust and confidence in its operations, fostering a safer environment for both correctional officers and inmates. This commitment signals a hopeful outlook for the future of the corrections system in Fiji, emphasizing the importance of integrity and safety within the service.
