The Fiji Corrections Service (FCS) has expressed optimism following the recent announcement of the National Budget, which increased its allocation to $62.5 million from the previous $57.8 million. This funding boost will enable FCS to implement a comprehensive reform agenda that includes the addition of 40 new positions, improvements in security and intelligence, and enhancements to rehabilitation programs under a revised framework.
FCS has expressed gratitude to the Government for this increased allocation, emphasizing that it represents a significant advancement in addressing critical development needs within its operational and capital projects for the upcoming financial year. The organization has highlighted its alignment with the National Development Plan 2025–2029, which underpins its commitment to enhancing safety, security, and rehabilitation initiatives.
With a focus on accountability, the FCS will utilize stringent monitoring and evaluation protocols to oversee its progress. It aims to collaborate with various stakeholders under its revamped rehabilitation framework, which is geared towards reducing crime and fostering a safer environment for all citizens and investors alike.
The proactive measures taken by FCS showcase a dedication to addressing systemic challenges and building a more efficient correctional system. Commissioner Dr. Jalesi Nakarawa has underscored the service’s commitment to furthering its operational effectiveness while positively impacting community safety. Additionally, the FCS is awaiting feedback from the Cabinet on key proposals intended to bolster the corrections system, including the establishment of a drug detention center and the commercialization of prison industries.
This renewed focus on rehabilitation, community engagement, and operational efficiency signals a hopeful trajectory for the Fiji Corrections Service as it works towards a more secure future for all.
