Fiji Corrections Service Officers Axed Amid Drug Scandal

Two officers from the Fiji Corrections Service (FCS) have been dismissed following their involvement in a drug-related incident during a police operation. The officers were found at a property that authorities suspect was being used as a drug laboratory, where various paraphernalia such as digital weighing scales, plastic film sealers, and zip-lock bags with suspected methamphetamine residues were seized.

An internal investigation revealed that the officers had been renting accommodation from a known drug dealer and former inmate of the Suva Remand Centre. Notably, it was found that both officers, while married to others, were cohabiting as partners at the residence.

FCS Commissioner Dr. Jalesi Nakarawa reaffirmed the organization’s strict zero-tolerance policy regarding misconduct and criminal behavior among its staff. He emphasized that any violations of ethical or legal standards will lead to immediate disciplinary action. This incident is part of FCS’s broader commitment to maintaining high ethical standards and addressing drug-related issues within its ranks; it follows previous dismissals of other officers for similar offenses.

The FCS is actively collaborating with law enforcement agencies to combat drug-related crimes and ensure that its personnel adhere to discipline, integrity, and accountability. These continuous efforts reflect a hopeful outlook for improving public trust in the corrections system, while striving to provide a safe environment for both officers and inmates.

This proactive approach by the FCS, including regular drug testing and collaboration with law enforcement, showcases its dedication to fostering a credible and ethical corrections system that prioritizes integrity and community safety.
