The Fiji Corrections Service is taking significant steps to modernize its data recording and management practices by moving away from outdated manual systems. Acting Commissioner Auta Moceisuva highlighted that a recent internal assessment revealed a critical lack of a robust statistical and information management framework within the agency.

Currently, the service primarily relies on traditional pen-and-paper methods, which have proven to be inefficient and slow down the processes of data collection and analysis. Moceisuva expressed frustration with these outdated methods, particularly given his background in international organizations and the private sector, but reassured that efforts are underway to enhance their information management systems.

To address these challenges, the Fiji Corrections Service has initiated discussions with the Fiji Bureau of Statistics and the Ministry of Justice, aiming to explore opportunities for digitizing records. These conversations are also considering potential support from diplomatic partners to strengthen their capacity for information management.

Despite facing resource limitations, the Corrections Service has begun implementing basic applications for data collection, which are anticipated to improve overall data management. These initiatives mark the first steps toward establishing a comprehensive and fully operational Management Information System in the future. This progression indicates a promising shift towards more efficient operations within the Fiji Corrections Service, ultimately benefiting the entire correctional system.
