The Fiji Corrections Service (FCS) has confirmed the appointment of Nurse Practitioner Vakaloloma Mocevakaca Nakarawa, emphasizing that this decision aligns with Fiji’s legal standards. In its official communication, FCS noted that Commissioner Nakarawa made the appointment in accordance with Section 130 (7) of the Constitution, which outlines the governance of appointments and removals within the correctional system. The service underscored its commitment to adhering to these legislative protocols.
Additionally, the FCS reiterated Section 103 (3), which empowers the Commissioner with command authority over the organization. In partnership with the Minister responsible for corrections, the Commissioner sets essential parameters regarding employment terms, qualifications, salaries, and staffing levels for the service.
Nurse Practitioner Nakarawa has been specially designated as the Medical Officer in Charge based in Suva, where she will oversee healthcare operations across the Southern, Central, and Eastern Divisions. Additionally, a Medical Officer in Lautoka will manage medical services in the Western and Northern Divisions. FCS disclosed that these strategic appointments are part of an internal restructuring initiative designed to enhance service delivery without increasing salaries or allowances.
The FCS is dedicated to promoting equal opportunities for its staff, reflecting the core values of the Public Service in Fiji.
This development occurs amidst ongoing scrutiny regarding the FCS’s internal governance and appointment procedures, with concerns previously raised about possible conflicts of interest. However, the FCS remains steadfast in its commitment to transparency and upholding the integrity of its operations, indicating a focus on improving services despite prevailing challenges.
The emphasis on legal compliance and equal employment opportunities signals a hopeful outlook for the future of the Fiji Corrections Service. These efforts aim to create a more efficient and well-managed environment beneficial not only for staff but also for the individuals under their care.
