Sixty-four recruits from the Fiji Corrections Service celebrated their graduation after completing a rigorous 14-week Basic Recruit Training program at the Corrections Academy in Naboro. This milestone underscores the continuous transformation journey of the Fiji Corrections Service.

During the ceremony, Commissioner Dr. Jalesi Nakarawa emphasized the importance of professionalism, integrity, and discipline for the new officers as they begin their careers. He advised that their approach to social media interaction and relationships with inmates should reflect these core values, warning that “familiarity breeds contentment,” which can compromise both safety and the integrity of their roles.

Beyond enforcing rules, Dr. Nakarawa highlighted the graduates’ important role in guiding lives and promoting rehabilitation. This graduation is a significant step towards the long-term vision of positioning the Fiji Corrections Training Academy as a regional training hub, aimed at enhancing the skills of correctional staff throughout the Pacific region.

A noteworthy aspect of this event was the graduation of four recruits from His Majesty’s Prison in Tonga, showcasing a spirit of regional collaboration within the corrections community. The Fiji Corrections Service is actively seeking partnerships with countries like New Zealand and Indonesia to tackle contemporary correctional challenges.

The ongoing efforts to adapt and innovate reflect a promising future for the corrections system in Fiji. With a focus on training, professional integrity, and regional cooperation, there is a clear commitment to improving rehabilitation practices while ensuring the safety of both officers and the communities they serve.

The graduation of these recruits highlights not only their commitment but also signals a positive evolution in the Fiji Corrections Service towards a more effective and supportive correctional environment.
