Two correction officers from the Fiji Corrections Service (FCS) have been terminated following their involvement in a drug-related incident during a police operation. These officers were present during a police raid at a property suspected of functioning as a drug lab, where authorities uncovered various drug-related items, such as digital weighing scales, plastic film sealers, and zip-lock bags with residues suspected to be methamphetamine.
Investigations revealed that the dismissed officers had been renting the property, which belongs to a known drug dealer and former inmate of the Suva Remand Centre. It was further noted that the officers, who are both married, had been living together at the location.
The FCS has reaffirmed its strict zero-tolerance policy towards misconduct, emphasizing the need for integrity among its personnel. Following due process, the officers were summarily dismissed. Dr. Jalesi Nakarawa, the Commissioner of Corrections, stressed that any violation of conduct, particularly involving criminal activities, will be met with immediate and decisive action.
Dr. Nakarawa reiterated the commitment of the FCS to uphold high ethical and professional standards and highlighted that staff members are expected to be role models within society. He stated that any actions that undermine the integrity of the service would not be tolerated.
This incident also highlights the FCS’s proactive approach towards maintaining discipline within its workforce. Recently, several officers have faced termination linked to drug-related issues, showcasing the organization’s commitment to enforcing professionalism among its ranks.
