Fiji Corrections Service Discovers Officers Accepting Freebies from Grace Road Businesses, Ensures Strict Disciplinary Action

An investigation by the Fiji Corrections Service (FCS) has exposed that its officers and their families were receiving complimentary meals and groceries from Grace Road businesses in the Suva area. The probe was initiated due to reports that some officers were receiving benefits from the incarcerated Grace Road Director, Daniel Kim.

Eleven officers have been confirmed to be involved in these activities. Consequently, the FCS has taken swift action against these officers and they will face disciplinary procedures under the policies of the Fiji Corrections Service.

FCS Commissioner, Dr. Jalesi Nakarawa, noted that such behaviors violate the organization’s ethical standards. He emphasized that the integrity and professionalism of the staff are crucial to the FCS operation. The Commissioner promised that such misconduct would not tarnish the dedication of the majority of the staff who work with thorough rigor and integrity.

Dr. Nakarawa reassured the public of FCS’s commitment to upholding the law and ensuring that all officers adhere strictly to the highest standards. The aimed focus of FCS is to keep reducing recurrence of such misdemeanors and to reinforce the understanding of ethical behavior amongst all their personnel. He also stated that they would continue to work with transparency and will handle the disciplinary actions internally, to respect the rights and privacy of all those involved.

The ultimate mission of FCS, he highlighted, is to guarantee the secure, safe, and humane custody of offenders, in addition to supporting their rehabilitation and reintegration into society, through professional corrections management.
