An investigation conducted by the Fiji Corrections Service (FCS) has found that its officers and their families have been receiving free meals and groceries from businesses owned by Grace Road in and around Suva.
The inquiry began following allegations of officers receiving favours from the detained Grace Road Director, Daniel Kim, who is incarcerated at Suva Remand Centre by the Department of Immigration’s orders. A total of eleven officers were found to be part of this illicit exchange.
FCS Commissioner, Dr. Jalesi Nakarawa, stated that these activities violate the ethical standards and regulatory rules that govern the conduct of FCS officers. He emphasized the importance of the officers’ integrity and professionalism in the functioning of the FCS. In light of these findings, immediate and stern action has been taken.
The officers found guilty of these actions will face disciplinary measures as per FCS’s policies and protocols. Dr. Nakarawa made it clear that the FCS has zero tolerance for misconduct or unethical behaviour, and reassured that the actions of a few don’t dilute the commendable efforts made by the majority of FCS staff who uphold the highest level of integrity.
The FCS is dedicated to maintaining law and order, ensuring that all officers adhere to the strictest standards of conduct. Efforts are being made to prevent the recurrence of such incidents and to underscore the significance of ethical behaviour among all staff.
Assuring the public of FCS’s transparency and accountability, Dr. Nakarawa stated that further details about the disciplinary actions would be handled internally, respecting the privacy and rights of all individuals involved. He reaffirmed FCS’s mission of providing safe, secure, and humane containment of offenders and facilitating their rehabilitation and reintegration into society, thereby upholding the law and ensuring public safety through professional corrections management.
