An extensive probe by the Fiji Corrections Service (FCS) has exposed an operation where its officers and their families were receiving complimentary meals and groceries from Grace Road businesses in the Suva region. The investigation kicked off when reports suggested certain officers were getting favours from the detained Grace Road Director, Daniel Kim, presently held at the Suva Remand Centre by the Department of Immigration.
Eleven officers have been implicated in this misconduct. FCS Commissioner, Dr Jalesi Nakarawa, stated these deeds clearly contravene the ethical principles and guidelines upheld by the FCS staff. He expressed, “Our officers’ integrity and professionalism are fundamental to the functioning of the Fiji Corrections Service.”
In response to these revelations, the FCS has taken quick and decisive action with disciplinary measures for the involved officers as per its policies and procedures. Dr Nakarawa emphasized, “Misconduct or unethical behaviour is not tolerated. A few rogue actions should not cast a shadow over the diligent and dedicated work of the majority of our staff, who execute their duties with high integrity.”
Nakarawa added that the FCS is dedicated to law enforcement and ensuring all officers maintain the highest conduct standards. He stated, “Proactive steps are in place to avoid such issues in the future and emphasize the importance of ethical behaviour among all our staff.”
Acknowledging the importance of transparency and accountability, Dr Nakarawa assures the public that the disciplinary proceedings will be managed with consideration for the privacy and rights of those involved. He reiterated, “FCS is committed to offenders’ safe, secure and humane containment, while focusing upon their rehabilitation and reintegration into society. We strive to uphold law and ensure public safety through professional corrections management.”
