The Fiji Corrections Service (FCS) has taken a strong stance against misconduct by terminating two officers implicated in a drug-related incident discovered during a police raid. The raid uncovered a property suspected of serving as a drug laboratory, where several incriminating items were seized, including digital weighing scales, plastic film sealers, and zip-lock bags containing methamphetamine residues.
Investigations revealed that the two officers had been residing in an apartment at the property, which is owned by a known drug dealer and former inmate from the Suva Remand Centre. Alarmingly, it was found that the officers, despite their marital status, were living together as partners.
Dr. Jalesi Nakarawa, the Commissioner of Corrections, reiterated the FCS’s unwavering zero-tolerance policy regarding any criminal behavior by its personnel. Following the disciplinary guidelines of the FCS, both officers were promptly dismissed due to their inappropriate actions. Dr. Nakarawa highlighted the essential need for integrity within the corrections system, emphasizing that any breaches, particularly those associated with criminal activities, will incur swift repercussions.
This event reflects the continued efforts of the FCS to confront drug-related issues among its staff, with a history of prior terminations for officers who tested positive for illegal substances during random screenings. The Commissioner also expressed a dedication to collaborating closely with law enforcement to combat drug-related crimes, while upholding principles of discipline, integrity, and accountability within the corrections framework.
As the FCS strengthens its operational protocols and enforces stringent measures against drug use and misconduct, there is a positive outlook for creating a safer and more integrity-focused corrections environment in Fiji. This proactive approach not only safeguards the integrity of correctional officers but also enhances the safety and trust within the correctional institutions they serve.
