Fiji Corrections Service Cites Lack of Resources in National Strategy Against Drugs Amidst Rising Drug Offences

The Fiji Corrections Service (FCS) is raising concerns over the lack of focus and resources dedicated to it as part of the national anti-drug strategy. Despite government efforts, such as the recent $2 million allocation for setting up the Narcotics Bureau under the Ministry of Home Affairs, the FCS says it has been left out of the strategy.

FCS Commissioner Jalesi Nakarawa pointed out the correctional system is already burdened with a rising tide of drug offenders. He anticipates the trend to worsen given the stricter law enforcement measures. The institution fears it is ill-equipped to handle a projected surge in drug-related convictions resulting from the new drug strategy and the formation of the National Narcotic Bureau, due to lack of dedicated drug rehabilitation programs.

Mr. Nakarawa praised the government for actively tackling the drug issue, but stressed that an effective strategy would need to cover detection, prosecution, rehabilitation, and reintegration of offenders. He flagged that current facilities are already maxed out and warned that lacking appropriate rehabilitation programs could lead to a continued cycle of reoffending.

For the 2024-2025 national budget, FCS has been allocated $57.8m. Mr. Nakarawa underscored the need for investment in areas critical for helping convicted drug offenders overcome addiction and integrate back into society.

The FCS has highlighted some key areas for government consideration, such as expanding correctional facilities, implementing rehabilitation programs, providing training and resources for correctional staff, and collaborating with health services for comprehensive care, which includes mental health support and addiction treatment.

Despite these challenges, Mr. Nakarawa reassured that the FCS remains dedicated to its mission of rehabilitating offenders and ensuring public safety.
