The Fiji Corrections Service (FCS) is taking significant steps to bolster medical care within its facilities by conducting specialized training workshops for its medical staff focused on HIV and Tuberculosis (TB). Over the past two days, two important workshops were held, addressing critical health challenges often faced in correctional environments.
During the first workshop, Dr. Luse, the TB program officer, led a session dedicated to tuberculosis, educating FCS medical personnel on effective treatment protocols. The training aimed to enhance clinical skills in the diagnosis, management, and prevention of TB, vital for safeguarding the health of inmates.
In addition to the TB workshop, FCS recently organized a session on HIV care, facilitated by Dr. Dharshika Balak, the National Sexual Reproductive Health officer. This workshop sought to elevate the understanding of HIV management among medical staff and improve care for inmates living with the virus. Key training components included information on HIV transmission, available treatment options, and the importance of providing psychosocial support.
“This training is particularly important as it helps create a more informed healthcare environment within correctional facilities, ensuring inmates receive comprehensive care tailored to their needs,” commented an FCS representative. With improved knowledge in managing TB and HIV, FCS medical personnel are poised to deliver higher quality healthcare services to those in their care.
These initiatives mark a positive development in the health management practices within correctional facilities, aiming for a more compassionate and effective healthcare system that addresses the needs of inmates effectively.
Summary: The Fiji Corrections Service has successfully conducted training workshops for medical personnel regarding TB and HIV management. With the support of health professionals, the training focuses on enhancing care and treatment protocols for inmates, contributing to better healthcare practices in correctional facilities.
