The Fiji Corrections Service (FCS) is currently awaiting a response from the Cabinet regarding five important proposals they submitted this year, as stated by Dr. Jalesi Nakarawa, the Commissioner of Corrections. The proposals include the establishment of a drug detention center, the commercialization of prison industries, the creation of the Rakiraki Correctional Centre, the signing of a memorandum of understanding with HM Prison Tonga, and the realignment of non-parole periods.
Dr. Nakarawa emphasized that as the FCS prepares for 2025, a stronger focus will be placed on coordination, collaboration, and communication across all levels of the organization. These initiatives aim to build trust, promote honesty and accountability, enhance service delivery, and tackle emerging challenges with resilience and innovation.
The proposed changes reflect a proactive approach to modernizing Fiji’s correctional system and addressing issues related to rehabilitation and crime prevention. The ultimate goal is to create a more effective and compassionate corrections environment, which could lead to long-term benefits for both the individuals involved and society as a whole.
This hopeful outlook illustrates that the Fiji Corrections Service is committed to not only improving the correctional experience but also fostering a safer community for all.
