The Fiji Corrections Service (FCS) has taken significant measures against two correctional officers who were terminated following their involvement in a drug-related incident during a recent police operation. Commissioner Dr. Jalesi Nakarawa reported that these officers were found at a property suspected of operating as a drug laboratory, where authorities confiscated various drug paraphernalia, including digital weighing scales and bags with residues believed to be methamphetamine.
Investigations indicated that the officers had been living in accommodations rented from a known drug dealer, a former inmate at the Suva Remand Centre. Disturbingly, both officers were cohabiting as partners despite being married to other individuals, raising serious concerns about their integrity and ability to maintain the standards expected in the corrections service.
Dr. Nakarawa reiterated FCS’s unwavering zero-tolerance policy on misconduct and criminal behavior among its staff. In accordance with disciplinary protocols, the officers were dismissed to emphasize the importance of integrity within the service. This incident is part of a broader initiative by FCS to tackle drug-related issues among its personnel and demonstrates a commitment to ethical conduct and accountability.
The FCS has a history of successfully managing similar misconduct cases, underscoring its dedication to maintaining high disciplinary standards. Dr. Nakarawa stated that public confidence in the corrections system heavily relies on the professionalism of its officers. To address the persistent challenges posed by drugs in correctional facilities, the FCS is implementing measures such as random searches and drug testing, while also enhancing collaboration with law enforcement agencies.
The proactive measures taken by the FCS showcase a hopeful commitment to restoring trust and safety within Fiji’s corrections environment, ultimately benefiting both officers and inmates. By reaffirming its commitment to ethical practices and integrity, the FCS aims to foster a correctional system that prioritizes community welfare and public safety.
