“Fiji Corrections Officer Faces Disciplinary Action Over Use of Force”

A Fiji Corrections Service (FCS) officer at the Lautoka Correctional Centre is facing disciplinary action for using force to ensure a prisoner’s compliance, resulting in minor facial injuries. The officer did not report the incident, which is a violation of FCS regulations.

The FCS learned of the incident through the prisoner’s pastor, leading to an investigation that confirmed the use of force. The injured prisoner was sent to a hospital for a medical examination.

In a statement on its Facebook page, the FCS acknowledged that the force used was deemed necessary to maintain order but highlighted the officer’s failure to report the incident, which goes against protocol, resulting in disciplinary measures.

The FCS emphasized its commitment to upholding the rights and dignity of all individuals in its care and ensuring that such lapses in reporting do not happen again. The organization maintains a zero-tolerance policy towards any form of abuse or misconduct and takes any violation of its standards and regulations very seriously.

The FCS assured the public and stakeholders that the safety, security, and humane treatment of all individuals in its custody are top priorities. The FCS is dedicated to the rehabilitation and reintegration of inmates back into society to foster a safer and more just community.
