The Fiji Corrections Service has recently addressed the misinformation circulating on social media about the denial of a family visit for prisoner Tevita Qaqanivalu at the Maximum Security Centre on December 20. Acting Commissioner Auta Moceisuva explained that the decision to deny the visit was made due to Qaqanivalu’s ongoing misbehavior and uncooperative behavior towards lawful authorities.

Moceisuva asserted, “That is an operational matter, and I make the call on all decisions regarding family visits.” Furthermore, the Acting Attorney General and Minister for Justice cleared up false assertions made by Qaqanivalu’s mother, emphasizing that she misrepresented the advice provided by prison officials to further a personal agenda.

The Acting Commissioner highlighted that family visits are a privilege that hinges on a prisoner’s conduct. Such visits are granted to those who exhibit good behavior, demonstrate productivity while incarcerated, obey prison rules, cooperate with authorities, and maintain positive familial support.

Tevita Qaqanivalu is currently serving time for the assault of a former Police Commissioner in 2016 and made headlines for causing disruption during his sentencing. In 2019, he notably escaped from prison, further complicating his incarceration.

In a positive note, the Fiji Corrections Service reported the success of the 2025 Family Day, where 1,021 prisoners welcomed visits from 2,308 family members across 16 correctional centers. Moceisuva mentioned, “Family visits strengthen connections and support social reintegration,” emphasizing the importance of these interactions.

Additionally, an investigation has been initiated concerning Qaqanivalu’s complaints, which include allegations of offensive text messages directed at the Attorney General and Minister for Justice. The Fiji Corrections Service expressed gratitude to families and stakeholders for their involvement and reaffirmed its commitment to supporting future Family Days.
