Fiji Corrections Commissioner Responds to Minister’s Serious Allegations

The Commissioner of the Fiji Corrections Service (FCS), Dr. Jalesi Nakarawa, has expressed that he has not been informed of any issues that would necessitate an investigation into the agency. He pointed out that the Corrections Act does not allow the Justice Minister, Siromi Turaga, to place a Constitutional Officer holder on leave.

In reaction to the Minister’s statement, which indicated that reports of serious incidents and potential breaches within the FCS have raised significant concerns about its governance and management, Dr. Nakarawa emphasized the principle of natural justice. He stressed that he should have been notified about the allegations to allow him the opportunity to respond adequately.

Currently on leave, Dr. Nakarawa mentioned that he received a letter from the Minister invoking Section 22(1) of the Corrections Act, which permits the Minister to form a committee to investigate incidents relating to security, governance, and the overall conduct of the Corrections Service. He noted, however, that he has not been informed of any specific issues that would justify such an investigation.

Dr. Nakarawa plans to formally respond to the Minister’s letter while also considering other avenues for redress.

This situation highlights the importance of transparency and communication within government agencies, especially in matters that could impact their leadership. It is crucial for officials to be informed of any allegations against them, as this not only upholds ethical standards but also ensures effective governance.

In summary, the Commissioner insists that he is unaware of any issues warranting investigation and is preparing to address the Minister’s claims while exploring options for further recourse. The situation may pave the way for improved dialogue and governance practices within the Fiji Corrections Service, fostering accountability and building trust within the system.
