The appointment of Dr. Jalesi Nakarawa as the Commissioner of the Fiji Corrections Service has been officially terminated following a Tribunal’s investigation into misconduct. This conclusion was reached by the Constitutional Offices Commission (COC), which led the inquiry after receiving multiple complaints in early 2025.

The allegations against Dr. Nakarawa included nepotism, abuse of office, and improper management of funds. To address these claims, a Tribunal composed of three High Court judges was established in April 2025 to investigate the matters and provide a recommendation to the President regarding Dr. Nakarawa’s future in the role.

Throughout the inquiry, over 40 witnesses were called to testify, and a thorough review of documentation took place. Dr. Nakarawa was allowed to respond to these allegations and had legal representation throughout the process. One primary concern was the recruitment of his wife and stepsons, which reportedly circumvented established hiring procedures. Testimonies indicated that a position was advertised to specifically align with his wife’s qualifications, contravening medical guidelines and existing governmental policy.

Additional complaints included allegations of abuse of office, claiming that some Correction Service personnel faced demotions or dismissals without proper notification or a chance to defend themselves. The Tribunal also explored the possibility of funds being used for personal purposes.

Ultimately, the Tribunal found sufficient evidence to substantiate the claims of nepotism and abuse of office. Their report concluded that Dr. Nakarawa’s conduct reflected poor leadership and misconduct that eroded public trust in the Fiji Corrections Service. Consequently, the Tribunal recommended his removal from office, which the Office of the President enacted through a termination letter issued on February 26, 2026.

As a result, the position of Corrections Commissioner is now vacant. Currently, Mr. Auta Moceisuva serves as the Acting Commissioner. This change marks an opportunity for the Fiji Corrections Service to reset and restore public confidence in its leadership and operations.
