Fiji Corrections Chief Suspended Amid Serious Allegations

Fiji’s Corrections Commissioner, Dr. Jalesi Nakarawa, has been placed on leave amid concerns regarding serious incidents and potential misconduct within the Fiji Corrections Service. Justice Minister Siromi Turaga announced that reports highlighting significant issues related to governance, security, and management have necessitated an immediate investigation into the matter.

In accordance with the Fiji Corrections Service Act 2006, and with the agreement of the Prime Minister and the Chairman of the Constitutional Offices Commission, Minister Turaga emphasized the importance of addressing these allegations. Dr. Nakarawa will remain on leave with full entitlements while the investigation is underway.

During his absence, Deputy Commissioner Auta Moceisuva will take on the responsibilities of Acting Commissioner. The Ministry of Justice has expressed a strong commitment to ensuring good governance, justice, and transparency within the corrections system. Turaga assured the public that the investigation will be carried out with diligence and in compliance with legal standards.
