Suspended Acting Fiji Corrections Service Commissioner Sevuloni Naucukidi is set to challenge the admissibility of a voice recording that allegedly captures a conversation between him and a member of his support staff, whom he is accused of threatening. This information was confirmed by Naucukidi’s defense lawyer, Samuela Savu, during a court appearance before Magistrate Shageeth Somaratne.
The prosecution, represented by Senior State Prosecutor Sadaf Shameem, stated that these legal issues surrounding the voice recording could be resolved during the upcoming trial, scheduled for April 1. This trial is expected to last for two days and involves a charge of criminal intimidation stemming from an incident in July 2025.
The allegations assert that during this time, Naucukidi threatened the member of his support staff, leading to the charge being filed after discussions with the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions. The court has postponed the case to March 4, when it will decide whether a voir dire hearing will take place or if the admissibility of the recording will be determined during the trial itself.
Such legal proceedings can be complex, often intertwining various elements of law and the rights of the individuals involved. The court’s decisions in the upcoming sessions will be closely monitored as they unfold.
