The Commissioner of the Fiji Corrections Service (FCS), Dr. Jalesi Nakarawa, has stated that he has not been informed of any issues requiring an investigation within the service. This statement follows comments made by Justice Minister Siromi Turaga, who indicated that serious incidents and potential breaches under Dr. Nakarawa’s leadership warrant an immediate inquiry given significant concerns about the governance, security, and management of the FCS.

Dr. Nakarawa emphasized the principles of natural justice, asserting that he should have been made aware of the exact allegations against him prior to any investigations. He mentioned that while he is currently on leave, the Justice Minister’s letter referenced Section 22(1) of the Corrections Act, which allows the Minister to appoint a committee to investigate incidents affecting FCS operations. However, Dr. Nakarawa expressed a lack of prior knowledge regarding any issues that could trigger such an investigation.

He pointed out the Minister’s decision to proceed without disclosing the nature of the allegations and indicated that he intends to respond to the Minister’s communication soon, while also considering other avenues for addressing the situation.

This situation highlights the importance of clear communication and accountability in government operations, as well as the need for due process in addressing allegations. It is a reminder that transparency is crucial to maintaining trust in leadership and oversight functions.

In a hopeful light, this may lead to improved practices in governance, ensuring that all parties involved are heard and that procedures are followed correctly in the pursuit of justice and effective management within the Fiji Corrections Service.
