The appointment of Dr. Jalesi Nakarawa as Commissioner of the Fiji Corrections Service has been terminated by the President’s Office following an investigation that uncovered significant misconduct. This decision was officially confirmed by the Constitutional Offices Commission in a statement released by the government.

The investigation stemmed from multiple complaints lodged last year, which included serious allegations of nepotism, abuse of office, and financial misconduct. A tribunal was established in April to delve into these claims and provide recommendations to the President’s office.

During the inquiry, over 40 witnesses were called to testify, and a substantial amount of documentation was reviewed. Dr. Nakarawa was allowed to respond to the allegations and was represented by legal counsel throughout the process. Key complaints highlighted his involvement in improperly recruiting his wife and stepsons, with claims that the hiring practices violated established procedures and policies. Specifically, it was alleged that a job was tailored to match his wife’s qualifications despite existing medical advice and cabinet guidelines.

Further allegations included mistreatment of employees within the corrections service, with accounts of demotions and dismissals occurring without due process. Additionally, there were assertions that certain funds had been improperly authorized for personal use.

The tribunal ultimately concluded that the allegations of nepotism and abuse of office were validated, noting that these actions reflected poor leadership and eroded public trust in the corrections service. As a result of this decision, the position of Commissioner for Corrections is currently vacant, with Auta Moceisuva stepping in as Acting Commissioner.

This situation underscores the importance of accountability in leadership roles and the need for transparency within public service institutions. As the Fiji Corrections Service moves forward, it presents an opportunity for reform and the restoration of public confidence.
