Acting Commissioner Sevuloni Naucukidi of the Fiji Corrections Service has expressed that the personal attacks directed at him on social media have severely impacted not only him but also his family and staff. In a recent exclusive interview, Naucukidi disclosed that he has informed the Constitutional Offices Commission (COC) of his willingness to step down from his position if it would benefit the Fiji Corrections Service (FCS).
Naucukidi reflected on his position, stating that he has had to question the worthiness of enduring such criticism. However, his dedication to his colleagues, their families, and the institution itself keeps him motivated. He has called on the public to be more judicious about the unverified information circulating online, emphasizing the importance of distinguishing between fact and rumor.
He noted that allegations against him are currently under police investigation, and he urged respect for the legal process as both external and internal inquiries into the rumors are being conducted. Responding to speculation about his future in the role, Naucukidi clarified that he did not apply for the acting commissioner position; instead, he accepted it out of a sense of duty and passion for the job.
Despite facing significant challenges, Naucukidi is determined to help restore trust and reinforce the FCS from within. This spirit of reform and accountability is vital as the Fiji corrections system navigates various controversies, particularly after the suspension of former Commissioner Jalesi Nakarawa due to allegations of misconduct.
The need for ethical conduct and professionalism is paramount as the FCS aspires to regain public confidence. With ongoing investigations, there is an opportunity for positive transformation within the organization, ultimately aimed at enhancing integrity and fostering a more reliable corrections framework in Fiji.
As Naucukidi and the institution confront these challenges, there is hope that they may usher in much-needed reforms that could revitalize the public’s perception of the Fiji Corrections Service, making it stronger and more responsive to the community’s needs.
