Fiji Corrections Chief Challenges Minister’s Investigation Claims

Fiji Corrections Service Commissioner Dr. Jalesi Nakarawa has stated that he has not been informed of any issues requiring investigation within the service. He highlighted that the Corrections Act does not give the Justice Minister authority to place a Constitutional Officer on leave. His remarks come in response to Justice Minister Siromi Turaga’s recent statement, which mentioned that the ministry had received reports of serious incidents and potential breaches under Dr. Nakarawa’s leadership. These allegations reportedly raise concerns about the governance, security, conduct, management, and administration of the Fiji Corrections Service.

Dr. Nakarawa emphasized that natural justice requires him to be informed of any allegations so he can respond appropriately. Although currently on leave, he indicated that he received a letter from the Minister referring to Section 22(1) of the Corrections Act, which permits the Minister to appoint a committee to investigate matters related to security and governance within the service. However, he expressed his surprise at not being made aware of any specific issues warranting such an investigation. Dr. Nakarawa mentioned that he is preparing a response to the Minister’s letter and considering options for further redress.

This situation, while complex, underscores the importance of transparency and communication in governmental processes. It is hopeful that both parties can address these concerns constructively, reinforcing accountability and a commitment to justice within the Fiji Corrections Service.
