Fiji Correction Service Faces Challenges with Medical Care for Elderly Inmates

The Fiji Correction Service is encountering significant difficulties in managing the medical conditions of inmates, particularly those over the age of 60. At the Nasinu facility, over fifty inmates in this age group have been convicted of sexual offenses, and many suffer from serious medical conditions such as strokes, which render them incapable of self-care.

Upon admission, comprehensive medical examinations are conducted for all inmates, often revealing pre-existing medical conditions that the Fiji Correction Service is legally obligated to treat. This responsibility is further compounded by the fact that some inmates are serving non-parole sentences imposed by the court, preventing any possibility of early release despite their health conditions.

Correctional officers are required to step in as caregivers for these inmates, ensuring they receive the necessary medical attention and daily care. This places a considerable strain on resources and staff, who are primarily trained in correctional management and not in providing medical or caregiving services.

“The Fiji Correction Service is committed to upholding the law and ensuring the well-being of all inmates under our care. However, the increasing number of elderly inmates with severe medical conditions presents a unique challenge,” Dr. Nakarawa said.

“We will be working closely with healthcare professionals and other relevant authorities to provide the best possible care for these inmates, but the situation underscores the need for broader discussions on the management of elderly and infirm inmates.”

The Fiji Correction Service is exploring various solutions, including enhanced training for correctional officers in caregiving, improved medical facilities within correctional institutions, and potential partnerships with healthcare providers. Despite these efforts, the need for a more sustainable, long-term solution remains evident.

The Fiji Correction Service remains dedicated to maintaining safety and security within correctional facilities while ensuring that all inmates, regardless of their health conditions, are treated with dignity and respect.

The Fiji Correction Service is responsible for the care, rehabilitation, and reintegration of inmates in Fiji. “Our mission is to enhance public safety through secure and humane containment of offenders and to facilitate their reintegration into society as law-abiding citizens,” Dr. Nakarawa added.
