Lack of awareness and inadequate coordination among various agencies are endangering children’s safety in Fiji, prompting the Fiji Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission (FHRADC) to contemplate the establishment of a national task force. Commissioner Chantelle Khan highlighted the Commission’s intention to organize a stakeholder meeting this year aimed at enhancing collaboration on matters concerning child welfare and missing children.

Khan underscored that forming a task force necessitates consultations, but the immediate priority is to unite key stakeholders to evaluate existing gaps and foster cooperation. The FHRADC also advises that if law enforcement agencies do not respond appropriately to reports, individuals should escalate the issues to the Human Rights Commission, which will work to ensure accountability from the relevant organizations.

Khan pointed out a concern regarding the lack of awareness among educators about their responsibilities under current laws. She noted that there is a requirement for teachers to fill out a Child Welfare Act form whenever a child-related incident occurs. During school hours, teachers are legally responsible for the safety and welfare of their students.

Furthermore, Khan acknowledged the challenges posed by certain communities that may resist the concept of human rights, particularly when collective rights are emphasized. Looking forward, the Commission intends to recruit qualified personnel, conduct community consultations nationwide, and carry out ongoing research concerning vulnerable groups, including children and people with disabilities.

This proactive approach by the FHRADC reflects a deep commitment to enhancing the protection and welfare of children in Fiji, and shows a promising direction for future collaborations that aim to create a safer environment for the nation’s youth.
