Reports have surfaced regarding underage girls sharing nude photographs for commercial purposes on the Telegram application. Lynda Tabuya, the Minister for Women, Children and Social Protection, stated that this pressing issue is currently being addressed by the Anti-Pornography Task Force.
Tabuya highlighted that banning Telegram in Fiji may be one of the actions on their agenda. Additionally, efforts are being made to prohibit access to pornography for minors. She also mentioned that a further step could involve banning social media platforms for users aged 16 and under.
The Minister pointed out that many incidents reported concerning children primarily relate to child neglect. She emphasized that children are often left unattended with their devices, leading to excessive screen time and unproductive behavior, as parents frequently engage in similar habits. Furthermore, the rise of cyberbullying and online harassment among children is a critical concern that needs to be addressed.
This situation highlights the urgent need for greater parental involvement and supervision regarding children’s online activities. A collaborative effort between the government, parents, and communities can lead to more effective strategies for ensuring the safety of minors in the digital space.
In conclusion, while the challenges posed by social media and online activities are significant, this response from government officials indicates a proactive stance towards safeguarding the well-being of children. With concrete measures in place, there is hope for creating a safer online environment for young users.
