The Fiji Police Force has reported that six cases related to the Commission of Inquiry (COI) are currently under review by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) for legal advice. These cases are a part of a larger group of 12 cases being managed by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), originating from complaints made both prior to and following the COI proceedings.
In a statement, the Fiji Police confirmed, “Of the 12 reports, six are currently with the ODPP for independent legal advice. These include serious allegations of abuse of office, obstruction, and perverting the course of justice.” It was noted that two of these cases were reported in 2024, while the remaining four emerged in 2025. Due to the sensitivity and gravity of these allegations, the CID has conducted comprehensive investigations before forwarding the cases for legal assessment.
The ODPP will now decide whether the gathered evidence supports formal charges or if further investigative work is required. Among these, a case concerning a 2024 complaint against the former Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) Commissioner for allegedly releasing confidential voter registration information has been closed due to insufficient evidence.
This development aligns with previous efforts by the Fiji Police Force to address issues raised by the COI report. In earlier updates, Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu outlined the existing investigations, emphasizing the importance of handling them with thoroughness and transparency. This approach reflects Fiji’s commitment to enhancing accountability and transparency within its governance structures.
Community expectations remain high, as these investigations are seen as pivotal in fostering trust in governmental institutions and promoting a culture of ethical governance. The CID’s proactive measures demonstrate a dedication to addressing past concerns and a hopeful outlook that such inquiries will lead to meaningful reforms and a stronger political landscape in Fiji.
