Government officials in Fiji are raising concerns about large amounts of cocaine that were believed to have entered the country during the previous administration. These questions suggest that a significant quantity of drugs may have gone unaccounted for prior to the current coalition government’s formation.

Pio Tikoduadua, the Defence Minister, highlighted this issue in a social media post, referencing reports from 2018 regarding cocaine washing up on Fiji’s shores. He questioned the whereabouts of the drugs, asking, “If individual bricks were washing up then, where did the rest of it go?” Tikoduadua emphasized that the Coalition Government is ramping up enforcement efforts and is actively engaging with regional and international partners to tackle drug smuggling.

He pointed out that many significant drug busts have occurred since the coalition took office, expressing a commitment to intensifying these efforts further. Tikoduadua’s statements drew mixed reactions online, with some users questioning his interpretation of the 2018 reports.

In a related discussion, Foreign Affairs Minister Sakiasi Ditoka backed Tikoduadua’s claims and further pointed out that the cocaine discoveries from 2018 raise questions that should be directed at the previous FijiFirst administration. Ditoka pressed the issue by asking, “And yes, ask your FijiFirst saviours where they took the rest of the cocaine to?”

This ongoing dialogue emphasizes the Coalition Government’s aim to address drug trafficking in Fiji and highlights their commitment to improving law enforcement practices. As they work on strengthening their strategies, there is hope for a more rigorous response to the drug trade, reflecting a proactive stance towards a safer society.
