Shonal Sharma, the General Manager of a mechanical company, has been further remanded for allegedly importing over 600 grams of cocaine. The 40-year-old appeared in the Suva Magistrate’s Court this morning before Magistrate Viniana Diroiroi.
The case emerged after a package that arrived in Fiji last week, labeled as a “smoke machine,” raised suspicions. After a thorough inspection, authorities discovered a concealed motherboard containing approximately 640 grams of a white powdered substance later confirmed to be cocaine. This interception was part of a joint operation conducted by the Fiji Police Force and the Fiji Revenue and Customs Service.
During the court proceedings, Prosecutor Eoghn Samisoni opposed bail, citing the severity of the charges. Defence Counsel Feizal Haniff was instructed to file a formal bail application. The matter has since been transferred to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions and is scheduled for a bail hearing on Friday.
This incident highlights an ongoing effort by Fijian authorities to combat drug trafficking within the region. Recent high-profile arrests, including those involving law enforcement officials, underscore the seriousness of the issues surrounding drug-related offenses and potential corruption within the justice system.
The proactive measures being taken by law enforcement are crucial in dismantling drug networks, ensuring public safety, and restoring trust in the authorities. As investigations continue, the hope is that these actions will lead to a safer community and a sustained effort to curb illicit drug activities in Fiji.
