Fiji COC to decide acting Corrections chief’s fate amid intimidation allegations

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has announced that the Constitutional Offices Commission (COC) will address the status of Acting Commissioner of Corrections, Sevuloni Naucukidi, who has recently faced charges of criminal intimidation. In his statement, Mr. Rabuka confirmed that the commission will convene to deliberate on whether to maintain or revoke Naucukidi’s acting status, which could lead to a new selection process for his position.

Mr. Rabuka noted that preliminary discussions among commission members have already been initiated through correspondence. “The COC will continue,” he stated, emphasizing that a decision will follow as they compile votes on whether to allow Naucukidi the benefit of the doubt or proceed with revocation.

This matter comes amidst previous incidents and ongoing scrutiny within the Fiji Corrections Service, particularly following the suspension of former Commissioner Jalesi Nakarawa over serious allegations. The COC has previously given Naucukidi a specific timeframe to respond to allegations of intimidation, highlighting officials’ commitments to ensuring accountability and integrity within the corrections environment.

In light of the challenges facing the Fiji Corrections Service, this situation presents a critical opportunity for reform. By tackling leadership concerns transparently, the commission can restore public trust and enhance the ethical standards expected of public officials. This process could pave the way for a more accountable and reliable corrections system, fostering hope for positive change in governance.
