Fiji Coalition Stands Firm as Prasad Resigns Amid FICAC Charges

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka addressed the media following the resignation of Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Professor Biman Prasad, asserting that the Coalition Government remains stable despite recent turbulence. Rabuka emphasized that the partnership between The People’s Alliance and the National Federation Party (NFP) is intact and underscored their shared commitment to key governmental agendas. “There has been no impact on the Coalition partnership,” he reiterated, as the government prepares to tackle crucial issues, including constitutional amendments and electoral reforms.

The situation surrounding Professor Prasad has become complicated after he was charged by the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) for breaches related to political disclosure laws. These charges stem from a review of complaints dating back to 2015, alleging that Prasad failed to comply with asset declaration requirements and provided false information. Despite this, Rabuka refuted claims that FICAC is being weaponized for political gains against members of the Coalition.

Rabuka noted, “The Government has not used FICAC as its weapon, nor have I personally tried to use FICAC,” assuring the public of its independence. He highlighted the government’s intent to review the agency’s functions but maintained that accountability must prevail without favoritism, reiterating that “everybody is equal under the law.”

In light of the charges, Prasad has confirmed his intent to step down from his ministerial roles while remaining an active member of Parliament. Rabuka expressed gratitude for Prasad’s contributions and the support extended to him during their time in the Cabinet.

Adding to the political climate, Rabuka dismissed suggestions that the recent resignations indicate a deliberate strategy by his party to consolidate power, insisting, “I know my party is not involved in that sort of scheming.” He appointed Assistant Minister Esrom Immanuel to take over finance and commerce portfolios previously held by Prasad.

This ongoing political situation in Fiji is under close scrutiny, with heightened calls for transparency and accountability among government officials. As the landscape evolves, it presents opportunities for dialogue on ethical conduct and public trust, potentially paving the way for reforms that bolster integrity and governance in Fiji’s political framework.
