Deputy Prime Minister Viliame Gavoka has expressed strong confidence in the unity and stability of Fiji’s Coalition Government, asserting that it remains “firm and more united than ever” despite recent political upheavals. His assurances come following the resignations of two Deputy Prime Ministers, who stepped down after being charged by the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC). These departures have led to increased public scrutiny over the Coalition’s coherence and prospects leading into the 2026 General Election.
Gavoka emphasized the necessity of reassuring the Fijian population about the government’s continued stability, stating, “The Coalition is on solid ground.” He acknowledged the absence of his former colleagues but affirmed that they would still play an integral role within the Coalition’s parliamentary caucus. “We’ll continue to benefit from their wise counsel into the next election next year,” he noted.
Highlighting the Coalition’s resilience, Gavoka maintained that Fiji’s economy and governance were stable, characterizing the partnership between the three political parties as a “three-legged stool,” which he said was essential for effective governance and progress. Despite the recent turbulence, the Deputy Prime Minister reaffirmed that capable leaders continue to manage the country’s affairs.
Former Deputy Prime Minister and leader of the National Federation Party (NFP), Professor Biman Prasad, is set to appear in court on November 17, 2025, while his counterpart Manoa Kamikamica will appear on November 28. The ongoing developments have raised discussions regarding accountability and transparency in government, with calls for reforms to ensure ethical conduct among officials.
Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has also weighed in, asserting the Coalition’s stability and emphasizing collaborative efforts among partners to address long-standing national issues. This united stance aims to foster not only political accountability but also a prosperous future for all Fijians.
As the government navigates through these challenges, the commitment to unity and collaboration among coalition partners offers hope for Fijians, reinforcing a vision for a stable and progressive governance structure. The ongoing political landscape, although fraught with challenges, paints a picture of resilience and a shared dedication to the welfare of the nation.
