The Fiji Kulas have secured their place in the semi-finals of the FIFA Women’s World Cup Oceania Qualifiers following a narrow 1-0 victory over the Vanuatu Women’s National Football Team at 4R Stadium, Govind Park. This crucial win enables both Fiji and the Papua New Guinea Women’s National Football Team to advance from Group B, with the semi-finals set to take place in New Zealand on April 12.
Fiji started strong, with Sofi Diyolowai netting the only goal of the match in the 20th minute, breaking through Vanuatu’s defense. Despite Vanuatu regrouping and gaining control of possession for much of the first half, they were unable to convert their attacks into goals, and Fiji maintained the lead going into halftime.
The match atmosphere was electric, with a large turnout of Fijian supporters cheering passionately for their team. As the second half unfolded, both teams exhibited formidable skill with aggressive plays. Vanuatu pressed hard in search of an equalizer, but Fiji’s defense held firm, thwarting their efforts and successfully preserving the lead.
At the final whistle, Fiji celebrated their hard-fought victory, with captain Naomi Waqanidrola expressing pride in her team’s performance and highlighting their determination. “Our main goal was to win and get the three points to qualify,” Waqanidrola stated. Her affirmation of teamwork and humility reflects the spirit that has fueled the team’s progress in the tournament.
This victory not only illustrates the Kulas’ capabilities on the pitch but also showcases the growing support and enthusiasm for women’s football in Fiji, promising an exciting future as they advance in the tournament.
