The Fiji men’s basketball team celebrated a much-awaited victory at the Melanesian Cup, marking their first win in the tournament after facing two tough losses earlier in the week. On Wednesday, Fiji dominated Vanuatu with an impressive score of 123-61 in their third match.
Tyrone McLennan shone in this match, scoring an outstanding 44 points and leading in efficiency. His performance was complemented by Jordan Lum Kon, who secured eight steals and contributed six assists. Veteran player Joshua Fox also made a significant impact by grabbing the highest number of rebounds in the game, totaling nine.
Fiji displayed a strong shooting performance with a success rate of 51%, in contrast to Vanuatu’s 37%. This win comes after a narrow loss to the Solomon Islands, where Fiji fell short with a score of 67-70, and a subsequent defeat against Papua New Guinea, losing 56-63.
Coach Earl Hughes’s team will now prepare to face New Caledonia in their next match scheduled for Friday. The team’s recent victory not only boosts their confidence but also highlights their potential as they look forward to upcoming challenges in the tournament. As Fiji continues to develop its basketball program, fans remain hopeful for more successes in the matches to come.
