Team Flame Tree, led by captain Peter Levastam, is favored to win the upcoming Flame Tree-sponsored Fiji Classic Game Fishing 2024, set to start this weekend. This exciting tournament, organized by the Denarau Game and Sports Fishing Club, marks the inaugural event of its kind.
The competition has attracted top anglers such as Jared Wood from Ice T, Thakor Punja from Lunasea, Darren Smith from Hoodlum, Alex Leigh, and the experienced Marc McElrath. Women’s representation includes Cristina Valente from Sidestep.
Event coordinator Glenn Wakeman shared that both local and international anglers have signed up to participate. The winning team will receive an invitation to compete in the prestigious Offshore World Championship in Costa Rica in 2025, along with a cash prize of $10,000. In addition to the main prize, there are numerous awards for various species, individual anglers, and boats, as well as exciting spot prizes. The tournament will take place at the new Clubhouse at Port Denarau Marina, conveniently located next to Sails Restaurant.
Wakeman mentioned the substantial cash prizes and high-quality fishing equipment available, with major awards including the Champion Team, Tournament Trophy, $10,000, and consolation prizes for the big boat team, male, female, and junior angler champions, along with the “Last Man Standing” prize.
Currently, Flame Tree leads the seasonal team rankings with 2313.7 points, followed closely by Ice T with 2278.4 points, and others like Hoodlum, Lunasea, Rawhiti, and Sere Na Ua trailing behind. In the standings for individual anglers, Jared Wood leads with 1771.8 points, followed by Levastam, Punja, and Smith.
This tournament promises not only fierce competition but also a celebration of fishing talent and camaraderie among anglers. The mix of local and international participants adds a vibrant dynamic to the event, showcasing the global appeal of fishing sports and fostering community spirit in the scenic setting of Fiji.
