Team Flame Tree, led by captain Peter Levestam, is the frontrunner to win the inaugural Flame Tree-sponsored Fiji Classic Game Fishing 2024 event, which kicks off this weekend. Organized by the Denarau Game and Sports Fishing Club, this tournament marks a significant milestone as it is the first anniversary edition.
Prominent competitors include top anglers such as Jared Wood (Ice T), Thakor Punja (Lunasea), Darren Smith (Hoodlum), Alex Leigh, and the seasoned Marc McElrath, alongside female participant Cristina Valente (Sidestep). Event coordinator Glenn Wakeman highlighted that the tournament has attracted both local and international anglers, further expanding its appeal.
The winning team will not only walk away with a cash prize of $10,000 but will also receive an invitation to compete in the Offshore World Championship in Costa Rica in 2025. Additionally, numerous prizes will be awarded for various categories, including species, individual anglers, and boats. The event will take place at the new Clubhouse at Port Denarau Marina, conveniently located next to Sails Restaurant.
Wakeman noted that participants will have a chance to win substantial cash awards and high-quality fishing gear. Major prizes include the Tournament Trophy for the Champion Team, alongside cash rewards, and special acknowledgments for top male, female, and junior anglers, as well as a Last Man Standing title.
Current standings show Flame Tree leading the season’s team tally with 2,313.7 points, followed closely by Ice T with 2,278.4 points, and Hoodlum at 1,715.5 points. Top individual anglers include Wood, leading with 1,771.8 points, followed by Levestam, Punja, and Smith.
