Team Flame Tree, led by captain Peter Levastam, is poised as the favorite to win the inaugural Flame Tree-sponsored Fiji Classic Game Fishing 2024, set to commence this weekend. This highly anticipated event is organized by the Denarau Game and Sports Fishing Club to celebrate its anniversary.
A number of notable anglers are expected to participate, including Peter Levastam, Jared Wood from Team Ice T, Thakor Punja representing Lunasea, Darren Smith from Hoodlum, Alex Leigh, and seasoned competitor Marc McElrath. The women’s competition features Cristina Valente from Sidestep.
Event coordinator Glenn Wakeman remarked that the tournament has drawn both local and international fishing enthusiasts. The winning team will not only walk away with a cash prize of $10,000 but also receive an invitation to the Offshore World Championship in Costa Rica in 2025.
Numerous additional prizes await participants, including awards for individual species catches, and both team and individual angler prizes. Notably, the tournament will take place at the new Clubhouse located at Port Denarau Marina, adjacent to Sails Restaurant.
Prizes are substantial, with the champion team awarded a trophy and the cash prize, while additional prizes include $1,500 for the consolation big boat team and awards for the top male, female, and junior anglers, as well as a “Last Man Standing” accolade.
As for the current season standings, Team Flame Tree is leading with 2,313.7 points, followed closely by Team Ice T with 2,278.4 points and Team Hoodlum with 1,715.5 points. In terms of individual standings, Jared Wood is in the lead with 1,771.8 points, followed by Peter Levastam with 1,500 points, Thakor Punja with 1,000 points, and Darren Smith with 555.4 points.
