The Fiji Rugby Union has taken a significant step towards enhancing its presence on the global rugby stage by signing a memorandum of understanding with the China Rugby Association. This agreement aims to establish development pathways for local rugby talent, providing players with opportunities for both athletic and educational growth.

As part of this collaboration, players will be able to receive formal education at prestigious Chinese universities while actively pursuing their rugby development. The first tangible outcome from this partnership is the selection of six exceptional rugby players— Iowane Nabe, Alowesi Nakarawa, Soko Nawaqatabu, Eroni Seru, Josevata Veibete, Lemeki Ravukivuki, and Vilimoni Taqiri—who have been awarded a three-year scholarship to study and play rugby in China.

John Sanday, chairman of the Fiji Rugby Union board, emphasized the importance of this agreement, highlighting that it not only opens new avenues for the players but also promotes Fijian culture and rugby in China. He stated, “In that agreement, we have these development pathways that have come through, and this is the first outcome. It has taken a bit of work to get it all signed up, but now it is in operation, and we are starting to drive results.”

The selected players departed Fiji on Saturday and will join the Hua Gang Rugby Club in Beijing, where they are set to compete in various tournaments, including the prestigious Beijing Cup. This initiative promises to enrich the players’ experiences while fostering international connections and cultural exchange through sports, illustrating a positive outlook for both Fijian rugby and its growing relationship with China.
