Fiji-China Eye Care Mission Signals Deepening Health Ties

The Minister for Health and Medical Services, Dr. Ratu Atonio Lalabalavu, and Assistant Minister for Health and Medical Services, Penioni Ravunawa, met with Dr. Yi Xuefeng, Deputy Director of the General Health Commission of Guangdong Province, China, at Dinem House in Toorak. This meeting, held this morning, highlights the ongoing health collaboration between Fiji and China.

Accompanied by a team of health specialists from the Guangdong Medical Team, Dr. Xuefeng’s visit to Fiji aims to conduct eye surgeries and other medical procedures over the next few days. Such initiatives strengthen medical partnerships, enhance healthcare delivery, and provide specialized services to local communities, showcasing the commitment to improving health access in Fiji.

Dr. Lalabalavu expressed gratitude for the Guangdong Medical Team’s support, emphasizing how these collaborations significantly improve quality healthcare access for Fijians. This continuing partnership reflects a spirit of goodwill and international cooperation, underscoring the positive impact that such efforts can have on local communities.

Recent activities by Chinese medical teams, including cataract surgeries performed at the CWM Eye Clinic, further illustrate the enduring relationship between Fiji and China. Since 2013, these teams have performed numerous free cataract surgeries, benefitting hundreds of patients and earning the affectionate title “Angel of Light.” This implies a hopeful future for enduring health partnerships that promise to uplift communities by addressing critical health issues.

Through such initiatives, the collaborative efforts between Fiji and China not only enhance the healthcare landscape but also foster stronger diplomatic ties, paving the way for future projects that will continue to contribute to the country’s overall socio-economic development.
