Direct flights between Fiji and mainland China may soon be a reality, with potential operations beginning by year’s end. Deputy Prime Minister Viliame Gavoka confirmed that Fiji Airways is in discussions to launch a direct route to Shanghai, aimed at bolstering tourism and business connectivity. This development follows existing flights to Hong Kong, and the Shanghai route is expected to attract a substantial number of travelers from China, a market known for its burgeoning middle class and propensity to spend.
Gavoka noted the importance of the Chinese market for both tourism and trade in Fiji, stating, “The Chinese are known for being good spenders. And we welcome the development in the Chinese market.” The anticipated air service agreement is currently under negotiation, reflecting optimism about the new opportunities this route could present.
This initiative aligns with previous discussions highlighted by Chinese Ambassador to Fiji, Zhou Jian, who emphasized the potential economic benefits of direct flights. In earlier conversations, Ambassador Zhou pointed out that Fiji’s popularity as a tourist destination is hampered by the lack of direct flight connectivity, especially when compared to Australia and New Zealand that have numerous direct flights to China. In January 2025, only a small fraction of visitors to Fiji were from China, demonstrating a significant market gap that could be filled by direct air links.
As both nations continue to explore this promising avenue, there is hope that direct flights will not only enhance tourism but also facilitate investment opportunities and a stronger economic relationship. This initiative promises to open new doors for cultural exchange and partnership, enriching the bilateral relations between Fiji and China. Further details regarding the launch of this route are expected in the coming months.
