China is eager to establish direct flights between the Chinese mainland and Fiji “as soon as possible,” according to Zhou Jian, China’s ambassador to Fiji. Zhou made this statement during a recent event in Suva celebrating the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China.

Zhou expressed China’s readiness to collaborate with Fijian officials to initiate these direct flights, which he believes will attract more Chinese tourists to Fiji and boost the local economy. He also extended an invitation for Fijians to visit China and explore its many offerings.

In his address, Ambassador Zhou emphasized the importance of fostering cooperation and strengthening the Fiji-China friendship, mentioning that direct flights are part of broader efforts to enhance people-to-people exchanges. He stated that “Amity between the people holds the key to sound state-to-state relations.”

Zhou highlighted ongoing initiatives aimed at promoting cultural understanding, which include sending Chinese art troupes and medical teams, as well as providing Chinese Government Scholarships to Fijians.

Efforts to increase Fiji’s visibility as a tourist destination in China are underway, with key partnerships already in place. Last year, Tourism Fiji, Fiji Airways, and Trip.com Group, a leading global travel service provider, signed a three-year strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) aimed at boosting Fiji’s presence in the Greater China market and promoting its brand as the “Where Happiness Comes Naturally” destination.

Currently, Fiji Airways connects to China through a codeshare agreement with Hong Kong Airlines.
