Chiefs in the northern region of Fiji have expressed their support for Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, the Tui Cakau, as the next President of Fiji. Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka confirmed on Tuesday that the government has nominated Ratu Naiqama for the position.

Ratu Ilisaniti Malodali, the Tui Nadogo, endorsed the government’s nominee but emphasized the importance of involving chiefs in the decision-making process. He acknowledged the government’s authority and constitutional powers but believed that the Great Council of Chiefs should have a voice to ensure the representation of the iTaukei people—the indigenous custodians of the land.

Ratu Joseva Maivalili, the Tui Wailevu, expressed the need for a presidential candidate who embodies justice and righteousness. When asked about his support for Ratu Naiqama, he remained neutral but emphasized the importance of a leader capable of uniting all districts and provinces in Fiji. He highlighted the importance of equality for the common people.

Ratu Maivalili also commended the current President of Fiji, Ratu Wiliame Katonivere, for his leadership over the past four years, wishing him well in his future endeavors. He reiterated the need for the next President to have a deep respect for God and the teachings of Christianity, which underpin the nation’s values.

He stressed the need for a visionary leader to propel Fiji forward with a stable and effective leadership style. Attempts to reach Ratu Jone Qomate, the Tui Labasa, for comments were unsuccessful.
