Traditional leaders in northern Fiji are rallying behind their paramount chief, Tui Cakau, Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, as the next candidate for the presidency. Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka announced on Tuesday that Ratu Naiqama is the Government’s nominee for the position.

Tui Nadogo, Ratu Ilisaniti Malodali, expressed his support for the nominee but emphasized the importance of including the chiefs in the decision-making process. He acknowledged the Government’s authority while advocating for input from the Great Council of Chiefs to ensure that the perspectives of the iTaukei people are represented.

Tui Wailevu, Ratu Joseva Maivalili, stated he supports a candidate for presidency who embodies justice and righteousness. When asked about his view on Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu’s nomination, he chose to remain neutral. Ratu Maivalili highlighted the need for a leader who can unify the various districts and provinces of Fiji and who demonstrates equality for all citizens.

He commended the efforts of the current President, Tui Macuata, Ratu Wiliame Katonivere, for his leadership over the past four years, wishing him well in his future endeavors. Ratu Maivalili mentioned that the new President should have a strong moral foundation and respect the Christian values that underpin Fijian society.

He asserted the need for a visionary leader to advance the nation with a stable approach, indicating that they would honor the upcoming President regardless of differences in leadership style from their predecessors. Attempts to reach Tui Labasa, Ratu Jone Qomate, for comment were unsuccessful.
