Leaders in the Northern region of Fiji have expressed their backing for the Tui Cakau, Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, as the next President of Fiji.

On Tuesday, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka announced Ratu Naiqama as the Government’s nominee for the presidential role. Tui Nadogo, Ratu Ilisaniti Malodali, expressed his support for the nominee but emphasized the importance of involving the chiefs in the decision-making process. He acknowledged the Government’s authority while advocating for the inclusion of the Great Council of Chiefs to ensure that the voices of the iTaukei people are represented.

Tui Wailevu, Ratu Joseva Maivalili, stated that he supports a candidate for the presidency who embodies justice and righteousness. When asked about his stance on the Government’s nominee, Ratu Naiqama, he opted to remain neutral. He stressed the necessity for a leader capable of uniting all districts and provinces in Fiji and highlighted the need for a leader who promotes equality.

Ratu Maivalili also recognized the contributions of the current President of Fiji and Tui Macuata, Ratu Wiliame Katonivere, for his leadership over the past four years, wishing him well in his future endeavors. He emphasized that the next President should have a deep respect for God and uphold the principles of Christianity, considering them vital to the country’s foundation.

He further indicated that they would respect the next President regardless of differing leadership styles from previous leaders, stating, “We need a visionary leader to take this nation forward with a stable style of leadership.” Attempts to reach Tui Labasa, Ratu Jone Qomate, for comments were unsuccessful.
