Leaders in Northern Fiji have expressed their backing for Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, the Tui Cakau, as the next President of Fiji. Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka confirmed on Tuesday that Ratu Naiqama is the government’s nominee for the position.

Ratu Ilisaniti Malodali, the Tui Nadogo, voiced his support for the nominee but emphasized the importance of involving chiefs in the decision-making process. He acknowledged the government’s authority while suggesting that appointments should consider the input of the Great Council of Chiefs to ensure the representation of the iTaukei people.

Ratu Joseva Maivalili, the Tui Wailevu, highlighted the need for a president who embodies justice and righteousness. When asked about his support for Ratu Naiqama, he chose to remain neutral. He expressed that the nation requires a leader capable of uniting all districts and provinces in Fiji, advocating for a leader who promotes equality.

Ratu Maivalili also praised the current President of Fiji, Ratu Wiliame Katonivere, for his leadership over the past four years, wishing him well in his future endeavors. He underscored the necessity for the next president to embody respect for God and uphold the principles of Christianity that underpin the nation.

He indicated that despite differing leadership styles from previous presidents, they would honor the next leader, calling for a visionary figure to steer the nation toward stability and progress. Attempts to reach Ratu Jone Qomate, the Tui Labasa, for his remarks were unsuccessful.
